Klopp has made Liverpool a complete team – Mascherano

first_img Loading… Back in 2007, Mascherano, who had been brought to English football by West Ham, was drafted into the ranks at Anfield and went on to enjoy a productive spell on Merseyside that included a Champions League final appearance. His efforts would eventually earn him a switch to Barcelona in 2010, with 139 appearances taken in for Liverpool. Rafa Benitez’s side were competitive during that time, but failed to get their hands on major silverware, having previously conquered the continent in memorable fashion back in 2005. Mascherano emerged as a key man for the Reds, with his qualities embraced even further at Barca, but he concedes that the bar has been raised considerably since Klopp took on a demanding coaching role. Liverpool have become European champions again under the German tactician, while fast closing in on a first English top-flight title triumph in 30 years. Mascherano told Ole of the rapid progress that has been made: “The team that continues to surprise me with the evolution it has had is Liverpool. “It is clear that Klopp has put it together in his image and likeness. “I am 10 years behind, I see how we played with that Liverpool team it was nothing like what I see today. “I have been following Klopp since he coached Dortmund, which was a pressing team similar to what Liverpool does today but now he has added a way to spread out the play, when before it was much more direct. “That evolution is what I like because, in the end, it ends up being a more complete team.” Liverpool appointed Klopp as successor to Brendan Rodgers in October 2015 after he had previously overseen title triumphs at Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund. read also:Klopp: It would be ‘unfair’ for Liverpool not to win Premier League Klopp was charged with the task of replicating that success in England and, while early setbacks were suffered in domestic and European final defeats, former glories were rekindled in some style during 2019 and the future is considered to be bright at Anfield. FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail分享 Jurgen Klopp has made Liverpool into the “complete team”, says Javier Mascherano, with the Reds’ class of 2019-20 considered to be a marked improvement on the side that an Argentine midfielder once graced. first_imgNEW DELHI: Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday announced that their fielding coach Dishant Yagnik has tested positive for coronavirus. The test was undertaken keeping in mind that the team members need to assemble in Mumbai next week for their flight to the UAE where the 13th IPL edition is set to be played from September 19 till November 10. Yagnik is currently in his hometown Udaipur and has been advised to get admitted to hospital for his 14-day quarantine, informed the franchise. “Post 14 days, Dishant will be undergoing two tests as per the protocols of BCCI. On return of two negative reports, he will be allowed to join the team after self isolating for 6 days and receiving 3 further negative tests upon his arrival in the UAE,” said Royals in a statement. The franchise further requested everyone, who has been in close proximity to the fielding coach in the past 10 days, to self isolate and get tested for COVID-19. “We can confirm that no Rajasthan Royals or other IPL players have been in close proximity to Dishant in the past 10 days. MBB : HOMECOMING: Philadelphia trio leads SU to huge road win at Villanova

first_img Facebook Twitter Google+ Published on February 20, 2011 at 12:00 pm PHILADELPHIA — Scoop Jardine’s grin flashed on the Wells Fargo Center’s video screen. As he backpedaled after drilling a 23-foot pull-up jumper, he couldn’t help it. Not back home in front of his friends and family. Not in a game in which he had hoped for a little revenge.Clinging to a narrow four-point lead when he re-entered the game with 7:35 remaining, Jardine’s 3-pointer was the dagger Syracuse needed to dispatch Big East rival Villanova on Monday. It capped six consecutive points from the junior point guard, who sat for a stretch of nearly five minutes with four fouls.‘I just took what they gave me,’ Jardine said. ‘I was in transition a few times, and I was stopping and popping and came off some curls and got in the lane and made some shots.’When he returned to the game, the Philadelphia native picked up where he left off, leading No. 17 Syracuse (23-6, 10-6 Big East) to a 69-64 win over No. 15 Villanova (21-7, 9-6) in front of a crowd of 18,899. Jardine scored a team-high 20 points, and he and two other Philadelphia natives — senior forward Rick Jackson and freshman guard Dion Waiters — combined for 45 points in a homecoming of sorts.Waiters sank two clutch free throws with 14.1 seconds remaining. Jackson added two more to seal the deal with 4.6 seconds left.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textWith the win, SU takes a huge step in front of a giant log-jam in the Big East standings.‘The difference was obviously the Philly guys,’ Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said.Jardine and Jackson hadn’t played for SU in Philadelphia in nearly two years, since Syracuse lost by double digits to the Wildcats on Feb. 7, 2009. Earlier this year, Villanova came into the Carrier Dome and upset the then-No. 3 Orange.Jardine, Jackson and Waiters had this game on their minds after that. And Jardine went out and had one of his best performances of the season — adding six assists and four rebounds to his point total.‘It was a big win,’ Jardine said. ‘It’s always great just to win. Villanova is, of course, our rival now because people know me from Philly. … We knew what they took from us up at our home, and we wanted to get back at them.’All three got started early. With SU down 6-0 to start the game, Jardine guided the Orange back, scoring seven points on a 13-1 run. He was noticeably aggressive, taking the ball to the rack and pulling up for jumpers without hesitation.Meanwhile, Jackson dominated inside. Coming off another stellar effort Saturday against Rutgers, Jackson converted on 8-of-9 shots and controlled the paint defensively. Waiters got his shot going early, too, scoring for the first time in four games.‘When we come home, we just want to beat Nova,’ Jackson said. ‘Just to come home to Philly and play Nova, all your family is here. Your friends that you went to high school with and people you used to know just want to support you. That’s a lot of love, and I think it helps you to play harder.’Jardine and Jackson played a two-man game the entire night. When Jackson wasn’t open inside, Jardine created for himself. Starters Kris Joseph and Brandon Triche contributed as well.Jardine didn’t mind playing the role of the villain in his hometown, crashing Senior Night and silencing the once-deafening crowd. He showed that when, coming back into the game with the four fouls, he immediately took his man off the dribble and sank a 14-foot floater. Minutes later, with Nova’s momentum at its highest, Jardine pulled up from the top of the key and drilled a 3. It was his way of displaying the player he has become since he left Philadelphia.‘My high school coach right there,’ Jardine said of Neumann-Goretti’s Carl Arrigale. ‘(He) put up with me for four years, when I was crazy.’And with the shot that led to the giant grin, Jardine helped SU avenge an earlier-season defeat and surpass its rival in the conference standings.‘When it got down to one, they ran the screen, and they went behind him on that screen,’ Boeheim said. ‘That was the ballgame.’aljohn@syr.educenter_img Commentslast_img read more

Alumnus performs for Pope Francis in New York

| boezzoyn

first_imgBen Pila never dreamed that he might one day play classical guitar for the Pope — but that is exactly what he will be doing. Pope Francis’ first visit to the U.S. will have him in New York on Friday to meet the families of several 9/11 victims, and Pila, a Thornton alumnus, will be there, playing what he described as “ambient music.”“It’s super humbling, and I’m very honored to be there,” Pila, who earned his doctorate in musicial arts in 2011 said. “I think it’ll be a very spiritual event. I’m not a very religious person, but I feel like being at something like that is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and has the potential to be life-changing.”Most classical musicians remember learning musical scales and cutting their teeth on “Greensleeves” and “Für Elise.” Pila, however, recalls his guitar education starting a bit differently.“I started playing guitar when I was 12 because I was obsessed with Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne,” Pila said.At the time, he said he never imagined that he’d end up playing classical guitar. Even at his performing arts high school, Pila said he tried to avoid the genre.Pila’s invitation to play at the National September 11 Memorial comes after spending six years — from 2007 to 2013 — playing at the annual 9/11 memorial ceremony, an opportunity he first got when he was still a graduate student at Juilliard. For Pila, these performances have been the most impactful in his long career, mainly because of the context in which he’s playing.“What impacted me the most was … being able to look out and see all of these people who are holding up pictures of their lost loved ones,” Pila said. “By playing music that is beautiful and peaceful, I like to think that I brought a little bit of comfort to them during that terrible day, when they have to think about what happened so many years ago.”Throughout Pila’s years playing at the annual memorial ceremony, he has brushed shoulders with everyone from politicians to fellow musicians. He recalls listening to psalms read by presidents Barack Obama and George Bush, encountering Michael Bloomberg in the musicians’ tent and having a three-minute conversation with Yo-Yo Ma about how musicians can maintain strong fingernails. These experiences, far from creating a sense of self-importance, have only served to accentuate Pila’s down-to-earth attitude — he calls playing for the Pope a “gig” and jokes about how his guitar instructor at USC named his book after a bodybuilding film.“[Professor] Scott Tennant wrote the technique book for classical guitarists,” Pila said. “It was called ‘Pumping Nylon,’ which is kind of a humorous title because it’s like weight lifting but for guitar.”Tennant, who taught many of Pila’s guitar classes as well as his one-on-one lessons, describes Pila in much of the same way, as a student motivated by a desire to share his music with others rather than a desire to boast about his success.“A moment that stood out to me was when he kind of nonchalantly told me that he would be playing for the 9/11 ceremony in New York,” Tennant recalled. “When he said, ‘By the way, I’m going to be playing with Yo-Yo Ma’ — that was a very important moment.”Pila came to USC to earn his D.M.A. after receiving his Master of Music degree, specializing in guitar performance, from Juilliard. Before that, he studied guitar as an undergraduate at Florida State University. At USC, Pila encountered professors who he felt helped shape his career today.“The teachers here have careers of their own that are pretty astounding,” Pila said. “Being able to learn from people that really have a hands-on outlook of the music industry, people that actually are performing artists, who have Grammys, who go out and tour the world […] is very beneficial to building a career.”Pila’s career has certainly been prolific. He is the only classical guitarist ever to be named a Presidential Scholar in the Arts, and his music has been featured on The Today Show on NBC as well as NPR’s From the Top. He has won numerous prizes and today teaches guitar at Polk State College in Tampa, Florida. But, despite his litany of successes, Pila’s focus for the future isn’t necessarily to achieve fame and excellence.“I just want to have a steady teaching gig, and I would like to perform as many concerts as possible,” Pila said before mentioning he will be performing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in April. For him, the performance isn’t about the prestige of the location or the audience. Instead, it’s all about the music because despite his long career playing classical guitar, he can still clearly remember being a 12-year-old kid obsessed with hard rock.“When I’m in really good guitar shape, there’s nothing better than playing a really good classical guitar repertoire,” Pila said. “But [playing pop songs] brings me full circle, back to my roots of playing Metallica and Ozzy.”Indeed, his version of Metallica’s “The Unforgiven” is up on his website, right next to Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” which he’ll be playing for Pope Francis. It’s a combination that only Pila could pull off — and, whether he’s playing for rock or religion, one that he makes uniquely his own.last_img read more

Korger: Wisconsin emerges victorious in B1G realignment

| boezzoyn

first_imgJen Small / The Badger Herald“Legends” and “Leaders.” Not exactly what we might call Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany’s finest moment. The names became laughable monikers that seemed to mock the 12 teams of the Big Ten thrown into divisions in a grab bag manner. Would you consider Indiana a legendary football program? Or two programs that had bowl-bans in 2012 leaders of the conference? Not exactly a great fit, Jim.Luckily, historians will soon be the only ones muttering those terrible names in passing when their research leads them into the long forgotten history of the conference. With the Big Ten seemingly once again set to realign its divisions in 2014, the conference has chosen a much more ingenious title for its two divisions.East and West. Seriously. The Big Ten has struck creative gold. This time the teams of the Big Ten are divided geographically. The West will be made up of all the conference teams in the central time zone -Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern, Illinois, Nebraska, Wisconsin – with the exception of Purdue. The East representatives consist of Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State combined with newcomers Maryland and Rutgers.Another amazing idea! Let’s split up the divisions geographically! By golly, who would have ever thought that could work? Does anybody have a ruler and pencil? I wonder how long the bigwigs at the Big Ten spent staring at a map until this became clear. Thanks to this common sense realignment, fans of teams like Nebraska and Rutgers can rejoice knowing they won’t have an annual game between the schools that requires one of the team’s fans to travel the almost 1,300 miles that separate the two campuses. This geographical realignment may favor Wisconsin more than any team. This new split brings back the yearly game between Iowa and Wisconsin that was effectively destroyed when the two programs were separated at the initial divisional alignment in 2010. Now, Badger and Hawkeye fans alike can take solace in knowing the teams will meet in 2013 after a two-year hiatus and the rivalry game will now become an annual occurrence. The Heartland Trophy, a brass bull that was introduced to the rivalry in 2004, can get dusted, polished and prepared to see the light of day again.Plus, something special seems to happen when these two teams meet. Some of the best games I’ve watched in my life have featured Wisconsin and Iowa, whether it was current Athletic Director Barry Alvarez trying to beat a program that was a perennial thorn in his side during his career as head coach or former running back Montee Ball’s coming-out party to lead the Badgers to a win in Iowa City in 2010.Heck, the all-time series between the two schools is tied at 42 wins each. The realignment also gives Wisconsin its natural border rival, Minnesota, back in a similar division. Just think, perhaps in the future down a very long and winding road, a football game between the Badgers and Gophers might actually have deeper implications than the growing shame of a certain state. With the league aiming to extend the conference schedule to nine games per team starting in 2016, the Badgers will also have some flexibility for crossover games with the teams from the opposing division. Even though the only proposed crossover game that would be guaranteed on an annual basis is Indiana versus Purdue, Wisconsin could make a strong case that Michigan State should be its protected rival. Maybe if the two programs make a trophy they could sell it better. Might I suggest a very thorny rose? Michigan State fans, I know you get it.From a competitive standpoint, things couldn’t have turned out any better for Wisconsin in their divisional draw. All of the teams in the slated West division – with Wisconsin included – combined to go 23-33 in conference play in 2012. Not exactly impressive. The East? Between their five teams that played in the Big Ten last year, the group combined for a 26-15 record in conference play. Adding a Rutgers team that was a tiebreaker away from winning the Big East in 2012 and a Maryland program that is rebuilding under Randy Edsall, it appears the East division will be stratospherically more competitive than the West. And that means Wisconsin will be competing consistently in the next few years with Nebraska for the opportunity to represent the West in the Big Ten Championship game. Sure, right now Northwestern looks like it could be potentially dangerous, but after that the competition sure looks mediocre. Plus, there will be no more annual games against Ohio State and Penn State for Wisconsin. It’s almost a similar situation to what the Badgers faced in 2012 with the two best teams in the Leaders division facing a bowl ban. I’m not saying that the divisional change has made it easy for Wisconsin – nothing is ever easy when it comes to sports – but it does seem to make the path to Pasadena or a playoff game easier than it used to be.Nick Korger is the sports editor of The Badger Herald and a fifth-year senior majoring in history and English. He also hosts “The Badger Herald Sports Hour” and is a member of the WBA-award winning “The Student Section” on 91.7 WSUM. Like or hate the divisional split? Dodgers’ Manny Machado has stayed calm in the face of some early bad luck

first_img Fire danger is on Dave Roberts’ mind as Dodgers head to San Francisco Dodgers’ Max Muncy trying to work his way out of slow start How Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling topped the baseball podcast empire Cody Bellinger homer gives Dodgers their first walkoff win of season To some, Machado’s 31 strikeouts in his first 120 at-bats reflect larger than his four homers, 11 RBIs, or his 15 runs scored. To Ward, Machado’s surface results do not reflect his success as a hitter since joining the Dodgers.Sign up for our Inside the Dodgers newsletter. Be the best Dodger fan you can be by getting daily intel on your favorite team. Subscribe here.“The other team usually tells you in how they pitch him,” Ward said. “There’s at-bats where he has just hit lasers for outs. If I just went by result-oriented, it would probably be like an average guy, but the presence at the plate, what he does and how he does is well above average.”Entering Tuesday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Machado and Cody Bellinger were each responsible for four of the Dodgers’ nine intentional walks in the last month. According to FanGraphs, only 44.7 percent of the pitches Machado saw were strikes; only 13 National League hitters saw fewer. In spite of getting relatively few hittable pitches, Machado has hit the ball hard. His average exit speed of 91.4 mph is the highest on the team; his line-drive rate trailed only Justin Turner and Yasiel Puig in the same time frame. While Turner and Puig enjoyed their best counting stats of any 30-day stretch this season, Machado did not.Still, Machado resisted the temptation to press. His heartbeat did not waver. Presented with a 2-and-2 fastball at the knees from Cardinals pitcher Daniel Poncedeleon, Machado took the pitch and seemed mildly surprised when home-plate umpire Jim Wolf called it a strike. LOS ANGELES — Manny Machado’s name was announced over the public-address system Tuesday night. He bowed his head and walked from the edge of the grass behind home plate toward the batter’s box, with all the nonchalance of a man who had been summoned to the next available window at the DMV. He gently tapped the home plate umpire’s leg with his bat, then the catcher, then dug his feet into the batter’s box.Machado’s serene walk-up routine is not an act. He saves his flair for the field. Even behind the scenes, away from the crowd, Dodgers hitting coach Turner Ward said that “everything he does is kind of a controlled presence.” This “heartbeat,” as Ward calls it, is the thing that’s impressed him the most.Monday marked one month since Machado became a Dodger. After they claimed Bryce Harper off waivers from the Washington Nationals without consummating a trade, Machado remains the biggest name acquisition by any team during the 2018 season.Machado has had ample reason to abandon a calm demeanor in the meantime, batting .267 and striking out more than he ever did in Baltimore. Yet Machado’s place in the batting order remains secure. Manager Dave Roberts has batted him second or third in every game since his arrival. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error In his second at-bat, Poncedeleon threw the same pitch, this time a bit higher. Machado struck a ground ball 109 mph off his bat to third baseman Jedd Gyorko. This time, his luck turned: Gyorko jerked away as the ball eluded his forehand for a base hit.CHARGOIS TO DLJ.T. Chargois was placed on the 10-day disabled list with an injury the team described as a “nerve issue.” Chargois left Monday’s game after facing one batter and was visibly upset as he walked off the mound. He was not available for comment.Manager Dave Roberts said Chargois’ injury, which is affecting his neck and right arm, is not believed to be serious. A meeting with the team’s training staff Tuesday offered “relief,” Roberts said.Chargois, 2-4 with a 3.45 ERA, can be activated as soon as Aug. 31. Teams can carry up to 40 players on their active roster starting Sept. 1, rendering any 10-day DL stint a technicality. To replace Chargois, the Dodgers recalled switch-pitcher Pat Venditte from Triple-A Oklahoma City for the eighth time this season. Venditte has appeared in only five major league games this year. He has a 1.75 earned-run average and a .168 opponents’ batting average in 45 Triple-A games.INJURY UPDATESPitcher Julio Urías (shoulder) started for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga, his fifth minor league rehabilitation appearance this month. The left-hander retired the first seven batters he faced, including five on strikeouts, then allowed a home run and a walk. His 2-1/3 innings pitched and 44 pitches were the most he has thrown in a game since undergoing anterior capsule surgery last year. …Pitcher Ross Stripling (back) said he was able to throw at “max effort” without pain from up to 120 feet on flat ground. The right-hander is scheduled to throw a bullpen Wednesday, a simulated game Friday, and be activated from the disabled list as early as Sunday. …Right-handed relievers Josh Fields (right shoulder inflammation) and Yimi Garcia (right forearm inflammation) each pitched a scoreless inning for Triple-A Oklahoma City. …Right-hander Dennis Santana (strained rotator cuff) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session, including some sliders and touching 90 mph with his fastball. It was his first full bullpen session since suffering the injury in June.UP NEXTDodgers (RHP Walker Buehler, 6-4, 3.19 ERA) vs. Cardinals (LHP Jack Flaherty, 7-6, 3.05 ERA), Wednesday, 7 p.m., SportsNet LA (where available), ESPNRelated Articles Dodgers hit seven home runs, sweep Colorado Rockies last_img read more
