Its over SF Retro Fit long a place to find quirky cool

first_img Tags: Business Share this: FacebookTwitterRedditemail,0% Retro Fit, the place where customers could find the best costume, the coolest sunglasses or prettiest vintage purse, will close.Steven LeMay, the owner, said he has to be out by Dec. 17, so there’s no Christmas for Retro Fit. LeMay tells the story best in the video, above. In short, Retro Fit is being pushed out of its space at 910 Valencia St. because it cannot pay the rent demanded: $9,680 a month. We will catch up Monday with Veritas, the landlord, and Green Tree Property Management. 0%center_img LeMay has been one of the most fun owners to talk to along the Valencia corridor. His departure feels similar to when Mia Gonzalez had to close Encantada Gallery and, suddenly, there was no single shop owner with all of the Mission’s history in her head — and the willingness to talk about it – on Valencia Street anymore. Can a place lose its soul? Does a commercial corridor have a soul?More immediately, a costume designer in the shop Saturday wondered what the opera and other performance groups would do with shops like Retro Fit gone. “It’s where we come to look for pieces that we need,” she said. For now, LeMay has not found another space. Permits for the moving truck to park on Valencia’s bike lanes may mean the store will stay beyond the 17th, but that is still up in the air. last_img read more

The back has scored 600 points for the Saints sinc

first_imgThe back has scored 600 points for the Saints since his debut in 2011 with his keen eye for the tryline and accuracy with the boot.Coming through the ‘Outstanding’ Saints Academy system, he has crossed the whitewash 96 times as well as adding 108 goals to his tally.Saints Head Coach Justin Holbrook said: “Tommy is an integral member of the squad and is a real go to player in our system.“He is professional, hardworking and not afraid to do what is best for the team. His leadership both on and off the field is important too – and he sets a good example to those youngsters in our side.”Whilst Tommy is famed for his spectacular and important finishes – he scored the winning try in the 2014 Grand Final – he’s also adept at fullback and carrying the ball from the line. This season he has made 2,870 metres – his highest to date.Tommy, 25, has also represented England Knights and is part of this season’s Elite Training Squad. He said: “Signing a new deal with the club was a simple decision to make. I’m really happy here and excited about the future under Justin Holbrook and the coaching team.“We have a squad that is capable of challenging on all fronts and I am looking forward to being part of that.“I know I’m not the finished article. I want to continue to improve and push for international honours.“I’ve had a taste with being around the England ETS squad this year, but I know if I continue to work hard for the Saints then I put myself in with a good chance of realising that ambition.”last_img read more

With damaged walls and significant water damage, it didn’t look like much could be done.“When Hurricane Matthew came through last year, we were communicating with folks in that area and identified this particular church as one of the harder hit that nobody had really mentioned or talked about,” John McIntyre, Wrightsville Beach Baptist Church pastor, said.- Advertisement – Members of the Wrightsville Beach Baptist Church have gotten together to help rebuild the church, such as replacing the drywall and putting in new church pews.McIntyre says it was not easy rebuilding the church but says it is just human nature to help those who need it.“We just thought ‘oh wow, we’ve got to help.’ So, I reach out to that pastor and just asked what are you going to be able to do? And they said ‘we’re predominately senior adults. There’s not much we can do.’ We just felt a desire to serve, just kind of rise up and as a church and as a body of believers and so we just stepped right in,” McIntyre said.Related Article: Black History Month: The history of Bellamy MansionEven though a lot of work has been done, they still need help to finish rebuilding the church. They will meet at the church this Saturday and welcome anyone and everyone to help fix up this church.“Our very first work day, we had churches from all over and even community members from Pender County. They were right at 100 there, serving that first day. It was really a community effort. We’d love to see that tomorrow and on the fourteenth,” McIntyre said.If you would like to help out tomorrow or on October 14, the congregation and volunteers will start at nine in the morning. He died hours later. This year, on the anniversary of his death, Ava returned to Cherry Grove, and released a bottle in her late husband’s honor, containing a letter, a photo, and sand from their last beach trip together.Just days later, that bottle was found on Holden Beach by Nancy.“I got this email that was titled, like, ‘Message in a bottle.’ And I nearly, I honestly nearly had a stroke,” said Ava.“It was sad and it was happy all together,” said Nancy.Nancy says she knows what Ava is going through. Protestors call out New Hanover County school board over handling of student

He tells us several cases of sexual abuse and racial discrimination were reported to administrators years ago. He says that previous board and this board have refused to address those complaints.“The safety of the children, the safety from racial discrimination and child sexual abuse. I think there needs to be aggressive movement on the part of the board and I’ve not seen that,” said Edgerton.Edgerton says he knows of at least 6 incidents where sexual abuse and racial bias was reported to school administrators dating back four years ago. He says the school board declined to pursue the allegations. The school board has responded to Edgerton before, chairwoman Lisa Estep says the board is moving in a direction to be more open and responsive to conflicts.Related Article: School board shake-up: Dems narrow control in New Hanover County“This board is working on so many things and we’re working in so many different areas,” Estep said. “We’ve got a Title IX committee, we’ve got an equity team that’s going to be developing into an equity committee. Watch People sleeping on the pavements prompted the deployment of security forces

first_img SharePrint During the first political activity in the Labour Party election campaign held in Marsa on Monday, Labour Party Leader Joseph Muscat said that the Police were asked to go to Marsa and other localities to restore the peace, after people complained that people were sleeping outside on the pavements.During an interview, when asked about immigration, Muscat mentioned that several people had told him that the presence of people sleeping on the pavement was creating fear. He explained that this led to the Government to ask security forces to be deployed in the area. Muscat said that this request was not related to the skin colour of the person but is an issue which applies to all.“The Nationalist Party is inconsistent on the issue of immigration” – MuscatMuscat also said that the Nationalist Party is inconsistent on the issue of immigration with the PN replying that the Government had left the summit on immigration without an agreement.Muscat said that the Government has told the European Union that Malta could be part of the solution but will not bear the burden of immigration alone. Referring to ad hoc agreements made in the past year between member states, Muscat said that Malta is ready to be part of a complete solution but not to be the solution. He also said that the number of buildings being created was a sign of Malta’s progress. He said that the people complaining about the discomfort that they are experiencing were likely to be those people who lived close to the building sites; however, they would not complain if they were the ones building them.He said that this is the reason that open spaces where one can relax were needed. He described what he had announced on Sunday – that the government would create a large open space – as an “opportunity cost” and said that instead of building factories, there would be a large open space, comparable to Ta’ Qali.Later on, Muscat also said that the area where the power station used to be should be developed into a recreational area for the locals.“Muscat said he dug in his heels, but left the summit without an agreement” – PNMeanwhile, referring to Valletta Summit on immigration, the PN said that despite the Prime Minister promising to find a solution, there was no sign of a solution to date.WhatsApp last_img read more

55 bodies recovered from Libya shipwreck – aid worker

first_img SharePrint Twitter / Red CrescentTwitter / Red Crescent Fifty-five bodies have been recovered so far off the Libyan coast, an aid worker said on Saturday, after a wooden boat carrying hundreds of migrants capsized on Thursday.Search operations are continuing to find other missing migrants, a member of Libyan Red Crescent told Reuters by phone. It was unclear how many people were on board and how many are still missing and feared to have been drowned after what the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR described as “the worst Mediterranean tragedy of this year.”Red Crescent member Abdulmenam Abu Sabay said the boat, which capsized near Komas, some 120 km (74.6 miles) east of Tripoli, was carrying 350 people, mostly from Sub-Saharan Africa. The Libyan navy on Thursday put the number of migrants on board at 250 and the UNHCR said up to 150 were feared dead.Libyan coast guards and local fishermen rescued 134 migrants on Thursday.“We do not have enough capability to carry out our operations. Citizens help us with their own vehicles,” Abu Sabay said.“The bodies are still in bags in a hangar and we are waiting for security authorities’ permission to bury them,” he added. The hangar belongs to a department set up to fight illegal migration.Libya is a hub for migrants and refugees, many of whom try to reach Europe in unseaworthy boats.WhatsApp last_img read more

Googles earnings climb to 335 billion

first_imgAdvertisement Google’s profit climbed to $ 3.35 billion in the first three months of the year as revenue thrived despite a trend toward cheaper ads on smartphones and tablets.“We had a very strong start to 2013, with $ 14.0 billion in revenue, up 31 percent year-on-year,” said Google chief executive Larry Page.Google shares that ended the official Nasdaq trading day slightly down regained ground in after-hours trades to $ 777 with a profit figure that topped Wall Street expectations. The number of paid clicks on ads posted at Google pages was 20 percent greater than those seen in the first quarter last year and up three percent from the final quarter of 2012.Meanwhile, in a closely watched figure, the cost per click for advertisers dropped four percent, indicating a trend toward less expensive mobile ads. – Advertisement – Google executives lauded the earnings in a conference call with financial analysts but spent ample time highlighting “big bets” ranging from Android mobile gadget software to self-driving cars and Internet-linked glasses.“Over the last two years we have worked hard to increase our velocity and improve our execution on the big bets that will change the world,” Page said.“Companies can tend to get comfortable doing what they’ve always done with a few minor tweaks, But incremental improvement is guaranteed to be obsolete over time. That is why we are investing in what appear to be speculative products today such as self-driving cars” he added.Google this week began shipping Internet-synched eyewear to software developers who signed on to experiment with them at a cost of $ 1,500 a pair.Terms of use on Google Glass included being forbidden from lending, selling or giving the eyewear to anyone else. Powerhouse Silicon Valley venture capital firms last week joined Google to launch a syndicate to back entrepreneurs building products for the Internet glasses, which were expected to hit the consumer market by year’s end.Glass wearers can speak commands to the eyewear, and built-in camera technology captures first-person perspectives. In another technology bet, Google has its sights set on Provo, Utah to become the third US city to get a Google Fiber network that moves Internet data at a gigabyte-per-second, about a thousand times faster than typical service.“It is really about pushing for speed and writing the next chapter of the Internet,” said Google chief financial officer Patrick Pichette.Blazingly fast Internet connections could increase the money-making potential of data-rich services such as YouTube and Google TV. Google Glass, which is powered by Android software, could potentially enhance the Internet giant’s money-making services, such as maps.“The best people want to work on the biggest bets and there is not much competition because no one else is crazy enough to try,” Page said, noting that the company also cares about revenue and profit along the way.“I get chills when I use a product that is the future, and that product is Glass,” Page said.Google’s ad strategy is to improve the ability to get messages to people at the right times and places across an array of Internet-linked devices, including watches, glasses and other forms not yet invented.“It is not about tablet, smartphone or desktop, The real question is, are we growing the pie of your day with Google, helping you through the day on all your devices.” Pichette said.Credit: Arab Newslast_img read more

first_imgAdvertisement Nowadays smartphones come in all shapes, colors and sizes. You can find one for just about any price you’re willing to pay. As such we’ve come to wonder if some internet-enabled phones should really be called smartphones at all, what with all the trouble getting their negligible RAM to perform basic functions!I’m happy to inform you that the pocket-friendly Vodafone SsabaSimu, the “innos M34T” doesn’t make the list of the mind bogglingly slow, unimpressive excuses for smartphones. When you pick up the super slim SabaSiimu from the Vodafone store, your wallet won’t be the only thing smiling. Here’s why;Unboxing The box, at purchase contains a 5.0V-1A charger, multi-purpose USB cable, 3.5 mm Headset jack, a couple of Quick start guides and a slim 4.5” long “innos” handset to get you off to a great start. – Advertisement – General Specs Display: 4.5 inches, Resolution:450 x 854 pixels (240 dpi)Operating System: Android 5.1.1 LollipopNetwork: GSM/WCDMA/LTE BandMemory: 8GB ROM, 1GB RAM, Micro SD Slot expandable up to 32GBBattery Capacity: – 1800mAhBand: GSM: 900/1800 WCDMA: 900/2100 LTE:Band3/7/20CPU: 1.2GHz quad-core Processor (MSM Qualcomm)Camera: 5 MP back Camera with flash, 2 MP front Camera without Flash.Data: GPRS, EDGE, 3G, 3.75G, 4G LTEPerformance It’s bright, that screen and it’s beautiful. The SsabaSimu has a very clean feel, a really bright screen even out in the bright sub-Saharan Africa sun, you’re covered! The screen is wide and long enough to support most of your favorite games, with an appreciable resolution. The SsabaSimu makes clear voice calls with an adjustable volume for both the earpiece and clear speaker-phone. You’ll hardly have to adjust positioning of the phone in order to catch what the person on the other line is saying to you.The SsabaSmu is running on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop which gives you an easier and more fluid experience browsing through the phone and switching between applications with minimum cases of hang-time or slow responses. The interfaces have been untouched and will need some work and personalization with your favorite Apps to pimp the stock Android surfaces.Camera The 5 megapixel back camera takes decent images especially with day light and enhances night pictures with a flash. The phone has a 2 Megapixel front phone camera that’s quite impressive. Say hello to Snapchat any time! Here’s what expect. Battery Life This little beauty will carry you well through your 20-hour day on regular functions such as calls, FM radio, and minimal internet usage of about 4 to 5 applications and even tether the rest of your crew to your data package if you like. You don’t have much to worry about or even scrum around searching for power banks as is the case for all things “smart” nowadays. This is a huge plus for the SsabaSimu! What’s even more interesting is that this phone when left alone will fully for no more than three (3) hours to give you six (6) times as much battery life.Internet Connectivity The SabaSiimu boasts a 4G LTE network connectivity, when you can find it and it’s quite brilliant! 3G and 2G connections work just as well, just as long as it’s not loaded with Apps you’re really never going to use, its processing speed shouldn’t take you on a journey of patience and longsuffering.Value for Money The Innos M34T or more popularly known as Vodafone’s SabbaSimu is arguably an entry level smartphone but definitely gives you value for your money. Going for Ugshs 299,000/- only at all Vodafone stores, you’ll arm yourself with a 4G LTE connection on a relatively low budget. What we like Long Battery LifeSlim bodyPriceWhat we don’t likeLow phone storageLow RAM (Lousy processing speed)Inconsistent 4G Connectivitylast_img read more

Microsoft reportedly working on Skype Teams to rival Slack

first_imgAdvertisement Over the past couple of years, Slack has hogged the spotlight in the team messaging space. Slack, for those unfamiliar, is a messaging app for teams. Now, Microsoft is working on a direct Slack competitor under the Skype brand, according to MSPowerUser.Skype Teams is going to be Microsoft’s take on messaging apps for teams, MSPowerUser reports. It will include a lot of similar features which you’ll find on Slack. For example, Skype Teams will allow you to chat in different groups within a team, also known as “channels”. Additionally, users will be able to talk to each other via Direct Messages on Skype Teams.Skype Teams will also feature Threaded Conversations, which is a major feature that’s lacking on Slack. With Threaded Conversations, you can simply reply to a message on a channel by clicking on the reply button and anyone else can join the thread whenever they want — just like Facebook Comments, or Disqus Comments. – Advertisement – [related-posts]Microsoft, of course, isn’t leaving out some of the core features of Skype on Skype Teams – it will be able to make video calls in a channel or privately, schedule online meetings, which can be quite useful for large teams.Skype Teams also works with other services to make the chatting experience even better, and we expect Microsoft will allow bots from its Bot Framework to work with Skype Teams. Lastly, the service will feature Office 365 integration (for things like PowerPoint, Word, etc), which is going to be a very useful feature for businesses who use Office 365.last_img read more
