The Indian government is planning to use big data and analytics information available on corporate houses and individuals for income tax assessments. From August, the government will start collecting statistics from usual sources like banks as well as online transactions and social media sites to match the spending and lifestyle patterns of a citizen with income declarations. An Ambitious StepThe seven-year Rs 1,000 crore ($156 million) ‘Project Insight’ is an ambitious step in the pipeline for tax overhaul, which will be in line with the world’s largest bio metric identity database, Bloomberg reported. Many other countries, such as Belgium, Canada and Australia, are already using big data to detect tax evasion, and the UK has a similar system in place called ‘Connect,’ that is said to have cost around £100 million. Italy recovered more than 14.2 billion euro as tax payments in 2014 in its bid to crack-down on tax-evaders. This was done through digging out mobile phone data, social data, city related data, web-based data, and health-related data from various accounts. The report added that the government had contracted L&T Infotech Ltd, an arm of Larsen & Toubro Ltd., last year to help build the network, which is a long-term project. The first phase of the project will see compliance rising 30-40 per cent, and will involve migration of existing data, including credit card expenditure, investments, cash transactions and deposits, to the new system. A central team will send notifications to concerned citizens to file tax declarations, it added.Tracking Individual ProfilesThe next phase of the project, which will be launched by December, will involve processing of the information to create individual profiles. The last phase will be started around May 2018, and put in place advanced systems to predict future defaults. The government’s plans to use big data and analytics to increase its revenue base is also making IT companies expect a boost in business.“As a nation, we can put together all the data,” Infosys vice president and India business head Raghu Cavale told PTI.“If you travel abroad, buy expensive jewellery, we can check your digital footprints on online shopping and piece together a person’s lifestyle and through that create a taxable database.”Cavale gave the example of Italy, where the government follows people’s lifestyle, travel and spending pattern to track potential tax evaders.India’s tax-payer base is just about 3 crore and has been increasing slowly for the last 5-10 years, which the government would like to see speed up. Infosys as well as other firms are bidding for various projects in the area. “Government is very well aware of data warehousing and analytics. It is talking to us as well as other firms,” Cavale told the news agency. Related ItemsBig DataIncome TaxIndiaItalySocial Media ProfilingTax EvasionUK
Brendon McCullum, who will play the next two editions of the Indian Premier League for Rajkot, said he was happy to be clubbed alongside former Chennai Super King collagues Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo. As many as seven of the 10 players picked in the draft on Tuesday by new IPL teams belonged to the Super Kings before they were suspended by the RM Lodha panel appointed by the Supreme Court. Three players from the other suspended team – Rajasthan Royals – made the cut.Four of Rajkot’s picks were erstwhile CSK players and that seemed to be a comforting factor for the New Zealand captain. In the Rajkot team, I will still be playing alongside Suresh (Raina), Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo with whom I have had a wonderful time at CSK,” McCullum told the Times of India.McCullum played two seasons for Chennai and 841 runs from 28 matches with one hundred and five half-centuries. However, the aggressive opening batsman did not open up on his feelings when asked if he would miss sharing the dressing room with Mahendra Singh Dhoni. India’s limited-overs captain was picked by Pune as their first-choice player.McCullum started his IPL career with the Kolkata Knight Riders and set the stage on fire with an unbeaten 158 off 63 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening match of the inaugural edition in 2008. Since then, the Kiwis has scored 2080 runs from 76 IPL matches at a strike rate of 128.47.After his stint with KKR, McCullum made a brief appearance for the Kochi Tuskers before being snapped up by Shahr Rukh Khan’s team again. McCullum does not see any problems coping in a new set-up after hammering 405 runs in 2014 and 436 in 2015.advertisement”Having played in India on so many occasions over the years, I am excited to be part of the Rajkot side for the next edition of the IPL. It has always been great playing in India as the crowds give you so much love, and they have an enthusiasm for the game which is unmatched,” he said.

In an op-ed column published in The Guardian, Ian Martin, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Nepal, called on the international community to strengthen its support so that Nepal can “sustain the still fragile success” of its peace process.“The biggest challenges are those which go to the roots of the insurgency: poverty, injustice and discrimination,” Mr. Martin wrote.“One of the costs of the conflict has been the retreat of local governance and arrested development in a desperately poor country where over 80 per cent of the population lives in rural districts. As Nepal aspires to becoming a federal democratic republic, expectations are high among diverse groups for greater control of their lives and resources.”Mr. Martin stressed that it was also vital to promote respect for the rule of law and to tackle impunity, noting that none of the human rights abuses – such as killings, disappearances and acts of torture – by either side during the protracted conflict have been prosecuted effectively. He added that the Maoists have entered the new Government “still with their own army – confined to cantonments, with their weapons stored under UN monitoring – and a Young Communist League which has persistently acted outside the law.“Commitments to resolve the future of the Maoist combatants, alongside what the peace agreements call the ‘democratization’ of the State army, must now be implemented.”But he said the Nepali people deserved enormous credit for the “truly indigenous” peace process that has led to the end of the war, the holding of Constituent Assembly elections and the formation of a democratic government, all within three years. The Special Representative said it was particularly impressive that this year’s elections had ensured that women and previously marginalized groups will now have strong showings in the Assembly. He concluded that the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) would continue to support the country’s transition.“The Maoist and non-Maoist parties have asked the United Nations to maintain a political presence while the issue of the former combatants is resolved, and we stand ready to support peacebuilding, recovery and long-term development,” he said.“From Delhi to Washington, from Brussels to Tokyo, the international community must be generous and steady in assisting Nepal to sustain the still fragile success of a remarkable peace process.” 28 August 2008Nepal deserves credit for the “remarkable” success of its peace process since its civil war ended two years ago, but now its energies must focus on overcoming poverty and discrimination, the chief United Nations official in the Asian country said today.
The report has been issued by WHO, on behalf of UN-Water – the inter-agency coordination mechanism for all freshwater-related issues, including sanitation.Funding gap is vast but countries have the ability to mobilize resourcesAccording to estimates by the World Bank, investments in infrastructure need to triple to $114 billion per year – a figure which does not include operating and maintenance costs. While this funding gap is vast, there are recent examples of countries having demonstrated the ability to mobilize the needed resources to meet development targets. For instance, 147 countries around the globe were able to successfully mobilize the resources required to meet the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target of halving the proportion of people without an improved source of water, and 95 among them met the corresponding target for sanitation. 77 countries met both.According to Guy Ryder, the Chair of UN-Water and the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), nations have the ability to address the challenges of meeting the ambitious SDG targets. “Increased investments in water and sanitation can yield substantial benefits for human health and development, generate employment and make sure that we leave no one behind,” he said. Against the backdrop of almost two billion people around the world relying on sources of drinking-water contaminated with faeces, the United Nations has called on countries to “radically” increase investments in water and sanitation infrastructure not only to protect their populations from deadly diseases but also to ensure that they are able to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).“Contaminated drinking-water is estimated to cause more than 500,000 diarrhoeal deaths each year and is a major factor in several neglected tropical diseases, including intestinal worms, schistosomiasis, and trachoma,” said Maria Neira, the Director of Department of Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health at the UN World Health Organization (WHO) in a news release today. The UN report, Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water 2017, notes that while countries have increased their budgets for water, sanitation and hygiene at an average annual rate of about 4.9 per cent over the last three years, 80 per cent of countries have reported that the increase is still insufficient to meet nationally-defined targets for those services. Therefore, in order to meet the ambitious SDG targets, which aim for universal access to safely managed water and sanitation services by 2030, countries need to use financial resources more efficiently as well as increase efforts to identify new sources of funding. The Global Assessment also highlights that these efforts are particularly important for developing countries where current national coverage targets are based on achieving access to basic infrastructure and which may not necessarily provide continuously safe and reliable services.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have benched quarterback Josh Freeman, replacing him with rookie, Mike Glennon, according to multiple sources.“This league is about finding a franchise quarterback, and with Josh’s roller-coaster career, we don’t feel he’s that guy,” a team source said.Coach Greg Schiano and general manager Mark Dominik met with the fifth-year QB Wednesday morning and told him that the rookie Glennon, would start in their Sunday home game against the Arizona Cardinals.Freeman has been struggling since the beginning of the season. He helped lead Tampa Bay to 0-3 start, completing a league-worst, 45.3 percent of his passes, and throwing only two touchdowns and two interceptions.“The main thing for us was the performance of the team the last nine games was 1-8 and that’s tough,” Dominik told the press Wednesday. “He hasn’t played well. That’s a part of it. If you don’t have a quarterback in this league, you don’t have a shot. We felt like we’d seen enough of what we needed to see.”“The reason we did it now is that we have a home game this week,” Dominik said. “We have a bye the next week and then we have a home game coming out of the bye. Our thought process was like, ‘Hey look, some people make the change at the bye week.’ We felt it was better for Mike that he has a game he can learn from for two weeks, he can go back and watch. This way he’s not just waiting to play.”
Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Con Andronis has been referred to as Melbourne’s own King Neptune. Already a major seafood supplier and retailer in Victoria, Andronis has recently opened up a new seafood restaurant, The Atlantic, in Melbourne’s Crown complex. With decades in the industry, Andronis’ story is an interesting one. He started out in the seafood game around 32 years ago. Aged 28 at the time, he says he was at a lull in his life and looking for something to do. “I was always involved in food. My parents always had a restaurant or some sort of involvement in food, and somehow I ended up in the fish game,” he tells. “Normally with the fish game it’s hereditary, and it certainly was those days, there were no outsiders that came into the industry.” In the early stages of his foray into fish, Andronis opened up a business called Kippers Seafood, setting up boutique fish shops in Toorak village and Church St, Brighton. “That sort of revolutionised the fish game a bit, I learnt very quickly. I was the first to put fillets of fish in the window, everybody laughed at me because before that people only sold whole fish,” he says, adding “filleted fish was what Toorak and Brighton people wanted, they didn’t want bones.” Andronis also made marinara mix, and gourmet selections of seafood including vol au vents, seafood pancakes, and sausages. After getting out of the business in 1983, Andronis “roamed around for a few years” and met his soon-to-be business partner George Kaparas around the nightclub scene. They decided to start a business, which saw the birth of Clamms Seafood, which started on Commercial Rd before it moved to Acland St in St Kilda. “The rest is history,” Andronis says. “It was a great shop, still is, and we started the small wholesale business from the back of the shop in St Kilda which grew very, very quickly.” After Andronis’ son James finished university he jumped on board the family business. “My son finished uni and decided stupidly to enter the fish game,” Andronis jokes. “It was good that he joined, he brought new, young ideas to the company and while the father and son combination isn’t exactly the easiest to work with we got on alright.” While the Acland St shop proved a busy retail shop, it also outgrew itself on the wholesale side. Now one of the biggest seafood wholesalers in Australia, the Clamms factory buys between 35 and 40 tonnes of fresh and frozen fish a week from suppliers around the country. “We had about 10 vans; now we have 45, so we built a brand new factory in Yarraville and we supply supermarkets, we export, we supply close to 800, if not more, restaurants in Melbourne alone and probably all of country Victoria as well,” Andronis says. Clamms Seafood supplies about 85 to 87 percent of all hatted restaurants in Melbourne. “We do a lot of high end and a lot of volume. We really do a mixture of things,” Andronis says. Over the last five to 10 years seafood has changed enormously, Andronis says. “People are much more aware of food these days, they’re pretty switched on. Some people used to use substitutes in the seafood game; no one can get away with stuff like that anymore.” European and Asian tastes have enormous influence in Melbourne’s restaurant scene, Andronis says. “We sell everything; there isn’t anything in the ocean now that is not introduced to restaurants. You wouldn’t think sea urchins or cuttle fish would ever be used. Octopus was only in Greek taverns but everyone uses it now, it’s just the most amazing things.” Already well established in the seafood industry, Andronis went on to develop the highly successful event space Events Warehouse on South Wharf, an acclaimed events venue with a menu that was created on the premises to fine restaurant standards. “From there I always had a dream, and I’d had a lot of opportunities to open restaurants, but I wanted to open a good seafood restaurant by the water,” Andronis said. The opportunity to open what is now The Atlantic restaurant, in Melbourne’s Crown Complex on Southbank, saw this dream become a reality. The Atlantic opened in March this year. “It’s a big restaurant, they’re not easy, and they involve a lot of work and you need to be consistent,” Andronis says. “Most major restaurants in Melbourne sell a lot of seafood but you don’t find that many good seafood restaurants in Melbourne, or Sydney. We’re about doing our own thing, and doing our best.”
MIAMI — Relatives and friends of people still missing after a pedestrian bridge collapsed on a highway gathered Friday in South Florida, longing and praying for miracles as authorities searched the smashed concrete that has already claimed six lives. While the families waited, investigators sought to understand why the 950-ton bridge gave way during construction. The cables supporting the span were being tightened following a “stress test” when it collapsed, authorities said.“This is a tragedy that we don’t want to re-occur anywhere in the United States,” said Juan Perez, director of the Miami-Dade police. “We just want to find out what caused this collapse to occur and people to die.”Detectives declared the rubble a homicide scene, and the National Transportation Safety Board arrived to investigate.“Our focus is to remove all of the cars and all of the victims in a dignified manner and not compromise the investigation in the process,” said Maurice Kemp, Miami-Dade County’s deputy mayor.Scheduled to open in 2019, the bridge would have provided safe passage over a canal and six lanes of traffic, and created a showpiece architectural feature connecting the campus of Florida International University with the community of Sweetwater, where many students live.

RanSim: Test ransomware attacks on your Windows PC by Martin Brinkmann on December 28, 2016 in Security – 19 commentsRansim is a ransomware simulator for Windows that simulates attacks of ten ransomware families against the computer system.Ransomware is without doubt a relatively new threat category that has gained some prominence in recent time.Security companies have added ransomware protection to their tools as a response, or released standalone programs with the aim to block ransomware from encrypting files on a computer system. It is difficult for most users to determine how well anti-ransomware programs protect their systems against ransomware threats. RanSim has been designed to simulate attacks on a computer system to find out if it is protected against ten common ransomware attacks.RanSimYou are asked to fill out information on the developer website before download options are provided. I suggest you download the program from Major Geeks or another third-party download repository instead. The program makers suggest that you keep your security software configured as is to simulate a real-world attack scenario. This may be problematic however in some cases. The new Malwarebytes Premium for instance blocked the execution of RanSim on target systems.RanSim’s interface is easy to use. It offers information on the ransomware test scenarios, and a single button that you may click on to start the test. The test should not take longer than a minute to complete. The program will download test files from the Internet, but won’t harm any files on the local system. It will enumerate the files though and display information on the vulnerability of these files. It tests the following ransomware scenarios:InsideCryptor — encrypts files using strong encryption and overwrites most of the content of the original files with the encrypted data.LockyVariant — simulates the behavior of a recent version of Locky ransomware.Mover — Encrypts files in a different folder using strong encryption and safely deletes the original files.Replacer — Replaces the content of the original files. A real ransomware would show a message that fools users into thinking they can recover them.Streamer — Encrypts files and writes data into a single file, using strong encryption, then deletes the original files.StrongCryptor — Encrypts files using strong encryption and safely deletes the original files.StrongCryptorFast — Encrypts files using strong encryption and deletes the original files.StrongCrytptorNet — Encrypts files using strong encryption and deletes the original files. It also simulates sending the encryption key to a server using an HTTP connection.ThorVariant — Simulates the behavior of a recent version of Thor ransomware.WeakCryptor — Encrypts files using weak encryption and deletes the original files.RanSim lists the number of successful and unsuccessful attacks during the test.Closing WordsSelect anti-ransomware software won’t block RanSim from execution. This is for instance the case for RansomFree which creates its own dummy files that it monitors. Other security software may block the execution of the application. This makes the program unusable on those machines. Still, it if works, it may be an eye opener if the anti-ransomware protection does not protect against the simulated attacks. Now You: Best protection against ransomware?Summary12345 Author Rating3.5 based on 3 votes Software Name RanSimOperating System WindowsSoftware Category SecurityLanding Page https://www.knowbe4.com/ransomware-simulator Advertisement
