Mumbai: A BJP worker has lodged a complaint with police accusing Bollywood actor and Congress’ Lok Sabha candidate Urmila Matondkar of making anti-Hindu remarks, an official said Sunday. The BJP worker also sought actions against Congress president Rahul Gandhi for allegedly instructing Matondkar to make the “calumnious comments” and journalist Rajdeep Sardesai allegedly for letting the actor make the remarks on his news channel and telecasting them. Suresh Nakhua, a Mumbai BJP worker, in his compliant lodged with the Powai police here on Saturday claimed the remarks hurt the Hindu community’s sentiments. Matondkar is the Congress’ candidate from Mumbai North Lok Sabha constituency. Nakhua said he submitted the complaint after watching Matondkar’s interview on a television news channel in which she said the “Hinduism is the most violent religion in the world”. “We have received the application. After seeking a legal opinion, we will take further action,” a Powai police station official said.
SEOUL, Korea, Republic Of — Samsung Electronics Co. has posted a near-30 per cent drop in operating profit for the last quarter after seeing slowing global demand for its memory chips and smartphones. The South Korean technology giant on Thursday said its operating profit during the October-December quarter declined 28.7 per cent at an annual pace to 10.8 trillion won ($9.7 billion). Sales fell by more than 10 per cent to reach 59.3 trillion won ($53.3 billion), while net income fell 31 per cent to reach 8.5 trillion won ($7.6 billion).Samsung says demand for its memory chips decreased due to “mounting external uncertainties” and inventory adjustments at major customers. It says smartphone sales also weakened amid a stagnant global market. The Associated Press
In an op-ed column published in The Guardian, Ian Martin, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Nepal, called on the international community to strengthen its support so that Nepal can “sustain the still fragile success” of its peace process.“The biggest challenges are those which go to the roots of the insurgency: poverty, injustice and discrimination,” Mr. Martin wrote.“One of the costs of the conflict has been the retreat of local governance and arrested development in a desperately poor country where over 80 per cent of the population lives in rural districts. As Nepal aspires to becoming a federal democratic republic, expectations are high among diverse groups for greater control of their lives and resources.”Mr. Martin stressed that it was also vital to promote respect for the rule of law and to tackle impunity, noting that none of the human rights abuses – such as killings, disappearances and acts of torture – by either side during the protracted conflict have been prosecuted effectively. He added that the Maoists have entered the new Government “still with their own army – confined to cantonments, with their weapons stored under UN monitoring – and a Young Communist League which has persistently acted outside the law.“Commitments to resolve the future of the Maoist combatants, alongside what the peace agreements call the ‘democratization’ of the State army, must now be implemented.”But he said the Nepali people deserved enormous credit for the “truly indigenous” peace process that has led to the end of the war, the holding of Constituent Assembly elections and the formation of a democratic government, all within three years. The Special Representative said it was particularly impressive that this year’s elections had ensured that women and previously marginalized groups will now have strong showings in the Assembly. He concluded that the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) would continue to support the country’s transition.“The Maoist and non-Maoist parties have asked the United Nations to maintain a political presence while the issue of the former combatants is resolved, and we stand ready to support peacebuilding, recovery and long-term development,” he said.“From Delhi to Washington, from Brussels to Tokyo, the international community must be generous and steady in assisting Nepal to sustain the still fragile success of a remarkable peace process.” 28 August 2008Nepal deserves credit for the “remarkable” success of its peace process since its civil war ended two years ago, but now its energies must focus on overcoming poverty and discrimination, the chief United Nations official in the Asian country said today.
The report has been issued by WHO, on behalf of UN-Water – the inter-agency coordination mechanism for all freshwater-related issues, including sanitation.Funding gap is vast but countries have the ability to mobilize resourcesAccording to estimates by the World Bank, investments in infrastructure need to triple to $114 billion per year – a figure which does not include operating and maintenance costs. While this funding gap is vast, there are recent examples of countries having demonstrated the ability to mobilize the needed resources to meet development targets. For instance, 147 countries around the globe were able to successfully mobilize the resources required to meet the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target of halving the proportion of people without an improved source of water, and 95 among them met the corresponding target for sanitation. 77 countries met both.According to Guy Ryder, the Chair of UN-Water and the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), nations have the ability to address the challenges of meeting the ambitious SDG targets. “Increased investments in water and sanitation can yield substantial benefits for human health and development, generate employment and make sure that we leave no one behind,” he said. Against the backdrop of almost two billion people around the world relying on sources of drinking-water contaminated with faeces, the United Nations has called on countries to “radically” increase investments in water and sanitation infrastructure not only to protect their populations from deadly diseases but also to ensure that they are able to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).“Contaminated drinking-water is estimated to cause more than 500,000 diarrhoeal deaths each year and is a major factor in several neglected tropical diseases, including intestinal worms, schistosomiasis, and trachoma,” said Maria Neira, the Director of Department of Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health at the UN World Health Organization (WHO) in a news release today. The UN report, Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water 2017, notes that while countries have increased their budgets for water, sanitation and hygiene at an average annual rate of about 4.9 per cent over the last three years, 80 per cent of countries have reported that the increase is still insufficient to meet nationally-defined targets for those services. Therefore, in order to meet the ambitious SDG targets, which aim for universal access to safely managed water and sanitation services by 2030, countries need to use financial resources more efficiently as well as increase efforts to identify new sources of funding. The Global Assessment also highlights that these efforts are particularly important for developing countries where current national coverage targets are based on achieving access to basic infrastructure and which may not necessarily provide continuously safe and reliable services.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have benched quarterback Josh Freeman, replacing him with rookie, Mike Glennon, according to multiple sources.“This league is about finding a franchise quarterback, and with Josh’s roller-coaster career, we don’t feel he’s that guy,” a team source said.Coach Greg Schiano and general manager Mark Dominik met with the fifth-year QB Wednesday morning and told him that the rookie Glennon, would start in their Sunday home game against the Arizona Cardinals.Freeman has been struggling since the beginning of the season. He helped lead Tampa Bay to 0-3 start, completing a league-worst, 45.3 percent of his passes, and throwing only two touchdowns and two interceptions.“The main thing for us was the performance of the team the last nine games was 1-8 and that’s tough,” Dominik told the press Wednesday. “He hasn’t played well. That’s a part of it. If you don’t have a quarterback in this league, you don’t have a shot. We felt like we’d seen enough of what we needed to see.”“The reason we did it now is that we have a home game this week,” Dominik said. “We have a bye the next week and then we have a home game coming out of the bye. Our thought process was like, ‘Hey look, some people make the change at the bye week.’ We felt it was better for Mike that he has a game he can learn from for two weeks, he can go back and watch. This way he’s not just waiting to play.”
Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Con Andronis has been referred to as Melbourne’s own King Neptune. Already a major seafood supplier and retailer in Victoria, Andronis has recently opened up a new seafood restaurant, The Atlantic, in Melbourne’s Crown complex. With decades in the industry, Andronis’ story is an interesting one. He started out in the seafood game around 32 years ago. Aged 28 at the time, he says he was at a lull in his life and looking for something to do. “I was always involved in food. My parents always had a restaurant or some sort of involvement in food, and somehow I ended up in the fish game,” he tells. “Normally with the fish game it’s hereditary, and it certainly was those days, there were no outsiders that came into the industry.” In the early stages of his foray into fish, Andronis opened up a business called Kippers Seafood, setting up boutique fish shops in Toorak village and Church St, Brighton. “That sort of revolutionised the fish game a bit, I learnt very quickly. I was the first to put fillets of fish in the window, everybody laughed at me because before that people only sold whole fish,” he says, adding “filleted fish was what Toorak and Brighton people wanted, they didn’t want bones.” Andronis also made marinara mix, and gourmet selections of seafood including vol au vents, seafood pancakes, and sausages. After getting out of the business in 1983, Andronis “roamed around for a few years” and met his soon-to-be business partner George Kaparas around the nightclub scene. They decided to start a business, which saw the birth of Clamms Seafood, which started on Commercial Rd before it moved to Acland St in St Kilda. “The rest is history,” Andronis says. “It was a great shop, still is, and we started the small wholesale business from the back of the shop in St Kilda which grew very, very quickly.” After Andronis’ son James finished university he jumped on board the family business. “My son finished uni and decided stupidly to enter the fish game,” Andronis jokes. “It was good that he joined, he brought new, young ideas to the company and while the father and son combination isn’t exactly the easiest to work with we got on alright.” While the Acland St shop proved a busy retail shop, it also outgrew itself on the wholesale side. Now one of the biggest seafood wholesalers in Australia, the Clamms factory buys between 35 and 40 tonnes of fresh and frozen fish a week from suppliers around the country. “We had about 10 vans; now we have 45, so we built a brand new factory in Yarraville and we supply supermarkets, we export, we supply close to 800, if not more, restaurants in Melbourne alone and probably all of country Victoria as well,” Andronis says. Clamms Seafood supplies about 85 to 87 percent of all hatted restaurants in Melbourne. “We do a lot of high end and a lot of volume. We really do a mixture of things,” Andronis says. Over the last five to 10 years seafood has changed enormously, Andronis says. “People are much more aware of food these days, they’re pretty switched on. Some people used to use substitutes in the seafood game; no one can get away with stuff like that anymore.” European and Asian tastes have enormous influence in Melbourne’s restaurant scene, Andronis says. “We sell everything; there isn’t anything in the ocean now that is not introduced to restaurants. You wouldn’t think sea urchins or cuttle fish would ever be used. Octopus was only in Greek taverns but everyone uses it now, it’s just the most amazing things.” Already well established in the seafood industry, Andronis went on to develop the highly successful event space Events Warehouse on South Wharf, an acclaimed events venue with a menu that was created on the premises to fine restaurant standards. “From there I always had a dream, and I’d had a lot of opportunities to open restaurants, but I wanted to open a good seafood restaurant by the water,” Andronis said. The opportunity to open what is now The Atlantic restaurant, in Melbourne’s Crown Complex on Southbank, saw this dream become a reality. The Atlantic opened in March this year. “It’s a big restaurant, they’re not easy, and they involve a lot of work and you need to be consistent,” Andronis says. “Most major restaurants in Melbourne sell a lot of seafood but you don’t find that many good seafood restaurants in Melbourne, or Sydney. We’re about doing our own thing, and doing our best.”
MIAMI — Relatives and friends of people still missing after a pedestrian bridge collapsed on a highway gathered Friday in South Florida, longing and praying for miracles as authorities searched the smashed concrete that has already claimed six lives. While the families waited, investigators sought to understand why the 950-ton bridge gave way during construction. The cables supporting the span were being tightened following a “stress test” when it collapsed, authorities said.“This is a tragedy that we don’t want to re-occur anywhere in the United States,” said Juan Perez, director of the Miami-Dade police. “We just want to find out what caused this collapse to occur and people to die.”Detectives declared the rubble a homicide scene, and the National Transportation Safety Board arrived to investigate.“Our focus is to remove all of the cars and all of the victims in a dignified manner and not compromise the investigation in the process,” said Maurice Kemp, Miami-Dade County’s deputy mayor.Scheduled to open in 2019, the bridge would have provided safe passage over a canal and six lanes of traffic, and created a showpiece architectural feature connecting the campus of Florida International University with the community of Sweetwater, where many students live.

RanSim: Test ransomware attacks on your Windows PC by Martin Brinkmann on December 28, 2016 in Security – 19 commentsRansim is a ransomware simulator for Windows that simulates attacks of ten ransomware families against the computer system.Ransomware is without doubt a relatively new threat category that has gained some prominence in recent time.Security companies have added ransomware protection to their tools as a response, or released standalone programs with the aim to block ransomware from encrypting files on a computer system. It is difficult for most users to determine how well anti-ransomware programs protect their systems against ransomware threats. RanSim has been designed to simulate attacks on a computer system to find out if it is protected against ten common ransomware attacks.RanSimYou are asked to fill out information on the developer website before download options are provided. I suggest you download the program from Major Geeks or another third-party download repository instead. The program makers suggest that you keep your security software configured as is to simulate a real-world attack scenario. This may be problematic however in some cases. The new Malwarebytes Premium for instance blocked the execution of RanSim on target systems.RanSim’s interface is easy to use. It offers information on the ransomware test scenarios, and a single button that you may click on to start the test. The test should not take longer than a minute to complete. The program will download test files from the Internet, but won’t harm any files on the local system. It will enumerate the files though and display information on the vulnerability of these files. It tests the following ransomware scenarios:InsideCryptor — encrypts files using strong encryption and overwrites most of the content of the original files with the encrypted data.LockyVariant — simulates the behavior of a recent version of Locky ransomware.Mover — Encrypts files in a different folder using strong encryption and safely deletes the original files.Replacer — Replaces the content of the original files. A real ransomware would show a message that fools users into thinking they can recover them.Streamer — Encrypts files and writes data into a single file, using strong encryption, then deletes the original files.StrongCryptor — Encrypts files using strong encryption and safely deletes the original files.StrongCryptorFast — Encrypts files using strong encryption and deletes the original files.StrongCrytptorNet — Encrypts files using strong encryption and deletes the original files. It also simulates sending the encryption key to a server using an HTTP connection.ThorVariant — Simulates the behavior of a recent version of Thor ransomware.WeakCryptor — Encrypts files using weak encryption and deletes the original files.RanSim lists the number of successful and unsuccessful attacks during the test.Closing WordsSelect anti-ransomware software won’t block RanSim from execution. This is for instance the case for RansomFree which creates its own dummy files that it monitors. Other security software may block the execution of the application. This makes the program unusable on those machines. Still, it if works, it may be an eye opener if the anti-ransomware protection does not protect against the simulated attacks. Now You: Best protection against ransomware?Summary12345 Author Rating3.5 based on 3 votes Software Name RanSimOperating System WindowsSoftware Category SecurityLanding Page https://www.knowbe4.com/ransomware-simulator Advertisement
How to update Intel hardware drivers by Martin Brinkmann on January 22, 2017 in Windows – Last Update: January 23, 2017 – 19 commentsIntel Driver Update Utility is a free program for Microsoft Windows devices to search for, download, and install Intel driver updates. It is usually a good idea to keep drivers up to date, especially if newer drivers improve the old or add new features that you may be interested in.While there is certainly something to “never change a running system” as well, driver updates may improve a component’s performance, stability or other parameters such as temperature. If you want to update Intel hardware, you can head over to the Intel website to download the latest driver versions from there manually. This works, but requires work on your part. You need to identify the hardware and installed driver version first, and then find the right driver that is provided for it.Note: The program is quite heavy when it comes to the installation of services, tasks and such on the system. We have added information and uninstallation instructions at the bottom of this article.Intel Driver Update UtilityIntel’s Driver Update Utility streamlines the process. It allows you to scan the PC for Intel hardware, and driver updates for those components, download them afterwards to install them in the end.It supports the following components currently:Graphics driversAudio drivers for Intel Desktop BoardWireless Networking driversWired Networking driversChipset INFIntel NUC driversIntel Compute Stick driversIntel Desktop Boards driversThe program is really easy to use. It displays an intro screen on start. You may click on the settings button there to change download directories, the maximum number of concurrent downloads, the log level, and the language of the application.A click on start scan runs the scan. It should not take longer than a couple of seconds to complete. The results screen that opens list the operating system that the Intel Driver Update Utility detected, as well as new driver versions for hardware of the device. It may list multiple drivers for a device, but only one is selected. This is usually the latest driver, but you are free to download other drivers that the tool displays on the screen. You may even switch to the “older drivers” tab to download select older versions of drivers for the hardware, or generic drivers. The program displays the driver name, installed and latest version of the driver, as well as a description and compatibility information. You may change the download directory manually there as well before you hit the download button to download the selected Intel drivers to the local system.Downloads are saved to an IntelComponents directory. You may install downloaded drivers directly from the Intel Driver Update Utility, or by executing the driver files directly from the download directory instead.A restart is usually required before the process completes.Other featuresIntel Driver Update Utility has a couple of other features of interest. First, you may open the history to check on any driver that you downloaded using it in the past, and check whether it was installed or not. Driver updates can be removed from the history, but they are kept on the local system. The second option allows you to search for Intel drivers manually. This is a bit complicated, as you cannot just key in the components name, or part of it. You need to select the product line, operating system, and the actual product name from a list of suggestions.Drivers are only provided for Intel desktop boards, Intel NUC boards, and the Intel Compute Stick. This means that it is usually better to head over to the Intel Download Center site directly to search for and download drivers this way.Intel Driver Update Utility uninstallationIntel’s program installs several services, scheduled tasks, and a driver during installation. Some are clearly marked as Telemetry, others seem to monitor the system and supposedly help system performance. You don’t get a say in what gets installed, and what does not. While you can opt out of the customer improvement program, scheduled telemetry tasks are still run.Services:Energy Server Service queencreek — Intel(r) Energy Checker SDK. I suggest you check Services, Scheduled Tasks, and the folders listed above manually to make sure everything was removed. If not, delete those manually. To remove the driver, do the following:Tap on the Windows-key, type cmd.exe, hold down the Shift-key and the Ctrl-key, and hit the Enter-key. Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Members of the tourist cooperative are hoping to be able to construct a shelter to protect boats during storms.José Gómez Burgos, secretary of the tourist Cooperativa Mar Caribe, said that they have already had a meeting with legislators that would allow them to construct a boat shelter for protection during stormy weather.Initially, the proposal has been requested for the CTM and beach, however, an Environmental Impact Manifestation (MIA) will need to be evaluated.“There is a concern among all the comrades that provide different services about not having a place to shelter the boats, while at the same time, the issue of not being able to maneuver along the central streets in a way that does not cause traffic conflict, so we have chosen that part from the beach because there is not yet much competition.“It was discussed Friday with Senator Marybel Villegas. Let’s see what the environmental authorities say,” said Gómez Burgos.Gomez Burgos explained that in the northern area of the CTM, locally referred to as Chunzubul, is an important reef area, so to carry out a project of this type would require an approved MIA.He added that during this municipal administration, there was a positive approach with authorities on the project, but it will be in the next administration where the idea will be more deeply thought out and possibly carried out.The project would represent different sectors of water service providers from divers to fishermen. There are an estimated 200 boats that operate in and around Playa del Carmen.Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)
Share The age-old standard for boarding up windows in vacant homes, plywood, is gradually becoming a thing of the past. In November, Fannie Mae announced it is now requiring the use of polycarbonate clearboarding on all of its properties in the pre-foreclosure stage. A state bill in Ohio that would ban the use of plywood when securing vacant homes has passed in the Ohio House and Senate and is waiting on the governor’s signature to become law.Fannie Mae began experimenting with clearboarding close to three years ago in a few states, and has now adopted it as the standard for vacant properties. Cities and municipalities are beginning to make changes as well. The Slavic Village community in Cleveland has initiated the Slavic Village Recovery Project, a strategic partnership with several organizations created in direct response to community and housing market needs in Slavic Village. They started using clearboarding on vacant homes about three years ago and are pleased with the results. In 2015, the city of Phoenix, Arizona, became one of the first municipalities to outlaw the use of plywood in securing unoccupied homes. Why the shift in the property preservation industry?“Anytime a property is boarded up by plywood, it is contributing to blight,” said Joel Ratner, President and CEO of Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, one of the partner organizations in the Slavic Village Recovery Project. “Plywood is the sign of negative things, so plywood is not helpful. We’re supportive of efforts to find other solutions, including polycarbonate, and anything that helps the house look like it’s inhabited.”Stacia Pugh, Housing Development Director at Slavic Village, said, “Using polycarbonate material has addressed a couple of issues for us. One is the general sense of blight. Boarded properties just stick out as eyesores more often and that makes them targets, which leads to the second issue, which was, it’s fairly easy to remove the plywood. Even with a variety of methods, we found that break-ins were commons with the homes that were boarded in that way.”Pugh said in Slavic Village, they were presented with an opportunity to use polycarbonate clearboarding a few years ago and they tried it—and they have not looked back since. Now Slavic Village uses clearboarding for all vacant homes on which they hold the title.“You can even do things like hang up blinds or shades, and if you’re just passing by, it might look more occupied to you as opposed to vacant and abandoned,” Pugh said. “It allows for the options to keep the homes looking fairly presentable, like someone cares about them, which obviously we do. The break-ins are way less common. It really does secure the home in a way that is way more effective than plywood.”Robert Klein, founder and chairman of Community Blight Solutions, which is based in Cleveland and markets its clearboarding product nationally through its SecureView Windows division, is heading the Slavic Village Recovery project in Cleveland. Earlier this month when the law banning plywood passed in the Ohio Senate, Klein stated, “Ohio’s ban on the use of plywood is the first legislation of its kind and a game-changing, bold statement that will modernize the fight against community blight. The new legislation will benefit the industry by reducing vandalism and allow the on-time conveyance of the properties. It will protect neighborhoods, reduce blight in the community, and maintain the value of homes in the neighborhoods. It is our hope that more states will follow Ohio’s example.”Phoenix Vice Mayor Kate Gallego was instrumental in getting a law passed last year in that city last year. Now the city requires all windows and door openings visible from the street to be secured with polycarbonate if the property has been vacant for 90 days (the previous number was 180).“Before we made the switch in managing the windows of our vacant homes, it was far more apparent when homes were sitting vacant,” Gallego said. “This made them magnets for crime and blight, and had a negative impact on the surrounding neighborhoods. Since making the switch, it is virtually impossible to tell when a house has been boarded up, and the stronger material makes these properties more resistant to crime.”She continued, “With the use of polycarbonate, vacant homes are now more seamlessly present in the community, helping to mitigate the drawbacks of having vacant homes in a particular neighborhood. Nobody wants to live on a street full of empty houses, and this obviously isn’t a permanent solution to the complex underlying dynamics at play. That being said, this was a relatively straightforward change that has had a positive impact on our community here in Phoenix.”Pugh said another upside to using clearboarding over plywood is that there is greater opportunity to reuse the polycarbonate materials because of their durability compared to plywood.“You can reuse plywood to some extent, but it doesn’t weather as well. It starts to rot when it gets wet or splits over time,” she said. “Polycarbonate is so solid, you can use it again and again. It certainly contributes to the overall recovery of the area. We have a lot of efforts going on and that’s just part of it. But it is a critical component.”Officials in the city of Tehachapi, California, found the clearboarding impossible to break through even when they tried their hardest.“So far we have only used the product on one home which was our initial test,” said Aaron Price, Code Enforcement Officer with the Tehachapi Police Department. “To date, nobody has broken into this home which has had polycarbonate on it for over six months. I personally took a baseball bat to the polycarbonate to test it and was only able to slightly scuff the polycarbonate after striking it until my hands were aching.” December 23, 2016 834 Views in Daily Dose, Headlines, News Communities Are Clearly Seeing Plywood Alternative Clearboarding Plywood Vacant and Abandoned Homes 2016-12-23 Seth Welborn
